It's almost time for the Ellis Hollow Fair! This year marks the 63rd

full of kids games, face painting, dunking booth, music, hayrides, SPCA animals and
lots of other family friendly entertainment.

Bookish Marcus the Third is worried he will never be taken seriously as an Emperor, as he is not brave or strong, not to mention that he's a young teenager. His loyal advisors think maybe dressing the part will help his credibility, while a con artist plans to take advantage of his insecurity. Perhaps Marcus could be a good leader if he could listen to his heart and his friends.

Full of music, fun and lots of imaginative "dress-up," The Emperor's New Clothes was a great kickoff to the Hangar Kiddstuff season. The Kiddstuff productions are always incredibly well acted and directed and make for an excellent introduction to lifelong theatre appreciation. Like Emperor, the productions are all around an hour long (or less!), and engrossing for even squirmy toddlers. On top of that, audience participation is often encouraged, making for an interactive theatre experience kids remember for years to come.

After seeing The Emperor's New Clothes, my kiddos and I are pumped for the rest of the season's offerings. My son is especially excited for Stuart Little, while my daughter is pumped for Bye Bye Birdie.

Hangar Kiddstuff tickets are just $9 each.

Winner of the 2009 Tony award for best play, God of Carnage, starts out as an uptight, polite conversation between two sets of parents. Their sons had had an altercation on the playground, and the parents felt it necessary to meet. Refined conversation quickly devolves into a hilariously uncivilized situation that had the audience roaring with laughter. All four cast members, Hillary Parker; Amy Tribbey; Brendan Powers and William Langanare are remarkably talented, and I especially enjoyed Tribbey as the benevolent, endlessly tidy Veronica. While God of Carnage is definitely not a show for kids, (it contains strong adult language and mature themes), it is definitely a show parents can relate to. God of Carnage is playing this Sunday afternoon and next Saturday afternoon, as well as and every night through June 20.

Also opening this week, the first show of Hangar's fantastic Kiddstuff series, The Emperor's New Clothes. More info on the Kiddstuff shows can be found in my last blog post here. IthacaSAHMhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11848714160843771163noreply@blogger.com9tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5866643579646087357.post-63395166018387198472015-06-11T12:35:00.000-07:002015-06-11T12:35:06.564-07:00Hangar Kiddstuff 2015 is coming! Are you itching for some awesome summer theatre for kids? summer, Hangar produces high quality, energetic, super-fun plays for
children (and their adults) to enjoy. The shows are all one-act (no
intermission) around an hour long, so even squirmiest preschoolers will
stay riveted. All shows are Thursday, Friday and Saturday 10am and noon.

If show-by-show is more your speed, all tickets are just $9 each. Tickets can be purchased online at the Hangar Box office, or by calling 607.273.8588.

On top of the Kiddstuff shows, Hangar will also present two mainstage shows that may be especially interesting for parents. "The Hound of Baskervilles" is a mystery comedy appropriate for older kids as well as adults, and "God of Carnage", a hilarious comedy about parents meeting to discuss a playground altercation between their children.

It began as a conversation on a Friday afternoon in January. Knitting Etc, where I had worked for the last nine months, had announced it was closing and Lisa wanted to discuss the state of the yarn retail market.

From the beginning it was clear that what both of us had loved about the store was the sense of community, of commonality that was shared by all who entered the store. That was the magic. I saw the store closing as a cosmic kick in the rear. It was time for me to pursue the vision that was always lingering in the back of my mind, a school of the handcrafts, where artisans and community members share their skills, where people learn not just a new craft, but of the work and time behind a body of knowledge that creates lovely items.

Lisa immediately got the vision. She spent some time ruminating. A few days later I texted her that I was going to see a space, did she want to tag along?

And just like that, Craftstitute was born.

There is a lot of hard work and agonizing that happens when starting a new business, particularly one with no clear set of rules and not many examples to follow. We had our guiding principles, that we were acting as partners with the creative community. That the classes had to be both affordable, yet priced to pay instructors fairly for their time - both actual teaching time and the preparatory work that goes into a good class or workshop. That we wanted a space that was welcoming and soothing - uncluttered to free up creative juices - and we wanted classes and workshops that were both traditional and novel. We also wanted to offer all this up to an underserved market - adults and teenagers.

The name too was almost a cosmic offering.
"I keep thinking Craft Institute," I texted a friend.
"What about Craftstitute?" She wrote back. "Or does that sound too much like prostitute?"

Initially, I was dubious, but in that strange way that things work out, the dot com was available, as were all the social media handles, which I've been told is a big deal. We jumped in and had Lisa St. John of the St. John Design Group create our logo and website. Working with a professional, especially one so talented, was a fantastic experience and money well spent. Once the website went live, we sighed. Chapter one was complete. We had built our school.

The first classes have proven us correct in surmising that people are hankering for a place where they can connect, create, and learn. From knitting and Zentangle to bookbinding and making natural home cleaning products, we are seeing that people are excited to learn new skills with others. At the Pysanky Egg Dyeing class, a father shared with his son (and the table at large) that he had done just this kind of egg decoration with his grandparents and those were special memories for him.
Parents often forget that they need to carve time out for themselves. The Zentangle class was a wonderful illustration of what happens when we give ourselves the gift of a couple of hours of creative time. No one who attended Julia Gray's class considered drawing part of their skill set, yet we all went home after and sat down with our children to draw and talk and create. There is magic in that.

By far, my favorite part of this has been the unexpected moments of laughter that pop up whenever you get people together doing something that pushes them outside of their comfort zone. Being creative is like that - there is experimentation and mistakes and happy moments of things going really well. Life is like that too. Sometimes we just need a reminder.

The following is repost from February, 2012. I'm happy to say both Nora and Finn now have many sessions of Soccer Shots under their belts, and they have loved every minute of it. Nora enjoys being in a big-kid's group now, and Finn thinks it's cool that his coach comes right to his preschool. Soccer Shots is currently registering for fall. Check out http://binghamton.ssreg.org/ for a location near you.

My Favorite: Soccer Shots

I'm excited for spring, because this year I plan to have Nora play some soccer! She's never participated in a sport other than our goofing around in the backyard. I hope she'll really have a lot of fun with it, and it feels like she will, because I've only heard good things about Soccer Shots. Soccer Shots - 'Introduction to soccer' sessions for 3-5 year olds and 6-9 year olds have been professionally designed and are led by trained Soccer Shots instructors, like Coach Eddie. Each 30-40 minute session is held at your daycare, school site, or local park. I asked Coach Eddie of Soccer Shots to tell me a little bit about it. Here's what he says:

"The primary objective of each session is to creatively introduce your child to the sport of soccer. Character development, physical skills, and fun are guaranteed in this exciting program.
Each Soccer Shots session incorporates the following: Basic soccer skills, exclusive Soccer Shots games, word of the day, use of imagination, fun fitness activities and exercises, coordination, balance, and agility development.

By enrolling your child in Soccer Shots, you can expect the following: Increased psychomotor development through fun fitness activities, introduction to team dynamics, character formation (lessons in honesty, sharing, helping, respect, self-control, attitude), development of active lifestyle habits."

And my favorite part? No gear is needed! All soccer equipment is provided to program participants.

You can check out the Soccer Shots website to see what sessions are going on near you and of course, to to reserve your child's spot! www.soccershots.org/binghamtonIthacaSAHMhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11848714160843771163noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5866643579646087357.post-91746556731380205042014-08-25T03:00:00.000-07:002014-09-06T05:32:41.182-07:00Fun at the Fair! What's the best way to celebrate finishing your first week back at
school? The Ellis Hollow Fair, of course! This year marks the 62nd
annual old-fashion country fair in the heart of the East Ithaca
neighborhood of Ellis Hollow. Free and open to the public, the fair is
full of kids games, face painting, dunking booth, music, hayrides, SPCA animals and
lots of other family friendly entertainment.

And did I mention the food? There's hot buttered corn on the cob,
chicken barbeque, ice cream, doughnuts, cotton candy, and everyone's

Yo Vikings! Is the tale of Emma, a charming, imaginative 5th
grader who has a tendency to embody every new subject she learns about, much
to the chagrin of her teacher, classmates, and sometimes family. Always looking
for adventure, Emma’s life is changed when the librarian helps her discover the
world of the Vikings. With some determination (and help from brother Ollie),
she sails on to win the hearts of her school and town.

It may take a while for Emma the Red to bring her friends around,
but the Hangar audience was won over before the first song has ended. The play itself is finely crafted by Marcus
Stevens (book and lyrics) and Sam Willmott (music), and based on a book (and inspired by a true story!) by Judy Schachner. Skillfully directed and
choreographed, this production is rounded out with a talented and engaging cast. Yo Vikings! is possibly the best
Kiddstuff Show I’ve seen at the Hangar! If this is a taste of the season to
come, I cannot wait! We brought along my son’s 5 year old friend, who had never
seen live theatre before. As the show ended, I think he summed it up perfectly,
“That. Was. Awesome!”
KEEPING IT REAL....

by Robin

Today, my first day home in ages with no sewing to do or yarn store hours to fill, I sat down to lunch with Mollie Makes, a very cool UK magazine about making stuff and people who make stuff. My people. As I turned to an article about lifestyle envy, you know that catch in your tummy you get when you sense that others are doing stuff so much better than you are, I put my hands up to realize that I had one earring on and that thing drifting across the floor in the breeze was a tumbleweed of dog hair. It could be mistaken for a guinea pig.

I had been patting myself on the back. I bought fabric Wednesday for a skirt and sewed it TODAY. That must be some kind of record. I had a good showing at Bloom last Friday for their Artists' Night, which makes me giggle since I don't consider myself an artist, and sold almost everything I brought. A nice woman who came to the MiMBY Gift Sale in December emailed about carrying some of my stuff in her new shop. I had my first Etsy sale in ages this week. I've been moonlighting in a yarn shop that I love, and dreaming up marketing plans for knitting. I've been having a good run.

What this happy blogger/maker isn't telling you is that the kitchen floor doesn't recall the last time it was mopped, but it might not have been in April. Note that it's May now, and it certainly hasn't happened in May either. This week's chocolate cake baking is the first cake that's been baked in months. My veggie garden finally saw the turning fork this week, though I think the weather has provided an awesome excuse for my neglect. I think everyone's sheets have been washed in the last week or two, but I'm not entirely sure. The dog has decided that I have relinquished the role of Keeper of the House and has taken over this duty. We won't go into how. The sheep have noticed the unmown lawn and continually offer to help with that. I can't remember what my desk looks like. Ditto the project table. Right now I'm sitting at my desk typing and thinking that I should put away the loose thumbtacks in one of those jars I keep saving and wondering again why there is a sheet hanging in the doorway.

That's okay. I envy people who can get it all done and feed their kids wholesome and healthy food for every meal too. I would like to think that I could work and run the household and everything would go smoothly and I wouldn't lose my temper, but that is not the reality of my world.

I make stuff. And messes. I mess up stuff too. I forget things and events and bills and occasionally my kids. Not really. Well, sometimes. I hope, despite my messy approach to life, that I bring happiness to people too. Making stuff makes me happy. My hope is that the stuff I make makes other people happy too. Wow, my son just came home with an enormous television - the perils of a teenager driving. Guess I better try to impose some order.

A Polka Tot Children's Consignment Sale event is coming to The Shops at Ithaca Mall April 4-6. Polka Tot is a semi-annual, 3-day gigantic sales event that looks like a consignment store on mega-steroids! The sale includes everything and anything you could ever need or want for babies through pre-teen at a fraction of retail costs.

Selling with Polka Tot provides local families a fast, easy and safe way to cash in on their unused and outgrown children's items. Consignors earn up to 70% of their sales and registration is open. Visit www.polkatotsale.com for more information.

Polka Tot is owned by Taylor Clark, a Syracuse-area mom of three children ages 1, 2, and 3. Seeing how quickly her children outgrew clothing, toys and gear and tired of paying an arm and a leg for these things, Taylor started Polka Tot just before her third baby was born. The idea was to provide a way for families to quickly, safely and easily sell and buy gently used quality children's items. Several consignors have earned more then $1000 during a weekend event with very little effort and families can refresh their playrooms and stock their closets without breaking the bank. It's really a win-win for everyone.

Well, we finally got some snow here in Ithaca, and it's time again for kids (and parents) to grab a sled and find a hill to zoom down! We are fortunate to live near an excellent hill, at the Eastern Heights park off of Snyder Hill and Skyvue Road. That park has a small hill and 2 very long slopes. The hills at Cornell Planations and near the Cornell Daycare are popular, as are hills by Belle Sherman and South Hill Elemenary Schools. Out of town, Rice Hill by Taughannock State Park is a biggie. Another popular spot is the cemetery outside of Brooktondale on Lounsbury Rd.

If you know of any great places to go sledding, please put them in the comments section or send them to ithacasahm@gmail.com. Thanks!IthacaSAHMhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11848714160843771163noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5866643579646087357.post-11544805009664345392014-01-31T06:00:00.000-08:002014-02-05T08:18:16.880-08:00Cash mob and mama's night out Feb 8 in support of Bloom after recent robbery

Since last winter, Bloom has been providing Ithaca families with a fun and interactive play space and ethically sourced retail options. The store has adorable clothes and toys and offers free-play, organized play, class, birthday party and date-night options.

Sadly, Bloom was the target of a late-night robbery in early January. While Co-owners Draya and McKenzie feel incredibly lucky that their store and merchandise were not damaged, they lost a considerable amount of cash and were responsible for fixing their shattered door, neither of which are being covered by their insurance.

Mama's Comfort Camp leaders are organizing a cash mob and Mama's Pajama Party to help! Please come out Feb 8th and help to replenish some of their funds and help them feel that their store is loved and safe! Draya and McKenzie say they are amazed by and grateful for the outpouring of support they have received from the community.
Okay, you guys, I am SOOO jealous right now. Ithaca is finally getting something I wished we had when my little ones were babies! Starting January 23rd, Cinemapolis is providing a service they call "Cry Baby Cinema" every Thursday! Here's the deal:

• Special Weekly Matinees for Grown Ups w/ Babies
• Each Thursday, Doors Open at 11 am
• Babes-in-Arms, Strollers, and Carriers Welcome
• All Five Regular Movies Screen with Lower Volume and Dimmed House Lights

**Parents should remember that these are NOT "family" films. They are screening their regular slate of films for grown-ups and welcoming babes-in-arms, strollers, and carriers.

If parents are bringing children old enough to take a seat in the theater and watch the film, they should do so only after reading up on the content of the films and ensuring it meets their own personal criteria for what is appropriate for their child.

Admission for Children attending to view the film will be our usual child rate of $6.50. Babes-in-arms, infants in strollers, and carriers will be let in for free. Adult tickets will be the usual matinee rate of $8.

I asked Brett Bossard, the executive director of Cinemapolis to tell me more about how this parent-friendly option came to happen.

"Cry Baby Cinema was the brainchild of board member Allison Andersen and her fellow education committee member, Karen Rodriguez. Karen had attended similar screenings at the Brattle Theater in Cambridge, MA. The committee discussed it at length, finding the right time, the right day and the right way to present the concept, and what you see is what they arrived at!"

The movies will be screened with dimmed house lights and slightly lower volume to allow parents to more easily care for their little ones in tow. For more information on Cinemapolis and to see what's playing, check out their website at http://www.cinemapolis.org/.

For the last 2 years, Finn has spent 80% of his free time playing with cars and trucks. His favorite thing in the whole world being Monster Trucks (see Monster Truck Birthday Party). When we found ourselves home one day, I decided it was time to have some fun. We had recently been through an automatic car wash where I'd had the idea to make something like this for his trucks. So we scrounged around the house for car wash items and this is what we came up with.

We found a foam box we weren't using anymore (I think it was a cd holder at one time). This would serve as the main drive through part of the car wash. I cut holes in the frame big enough for monster trucks to drive though (and therefore Hotwheels cars would fit as well).

I planned where ribbons and felt pieces would hang down and attached them with wooden skewers.

I found that hair rollers made the perfect car wash accessory, so to keep them rolling, I put a plastic peg through the floor for it to sit on. I had to cut into the side a bit for the rollers to be wide enough and still work.

I hot glued everything in place and let Finn play with it. BUT the car wash wasn't done....
