The Vikings have Landed!

Adventure! Imagination! Music! The Hangar Theatre has done it again! They’ve blown me away with Yo Vikings! The first show of this year’s Kiddstuff season.

Yo Vikings! Is the tale of Emma, a charming, imaginative 5th grader who has a tendency to embody every new subject she learns about, much to the chagrin of her teacher, classmates, and sometimes family. Always looking for adventure, Emma’s life is changed when the librarian helps her discover the world of the Vikings. With some determination (and help from brother Ollie), she sails on to win the hearts of her school and town.

It may take a while for Emma the Red to bring her friends around, but the Hangar audience was won over before the first song has ended. The play itself is finely crafted by Marcus Stevens (book and lyrics) and Sam Willmott (music), and based on a book (and inspired by a true story!) by Judy Schachner. Skillfully directed and choreographed, this production is rounded out with a talented and engaging cast. Yo Vikings! is possibly the best Kiddstuff Show I’ve seen at the Hangar!  If this is a taste of the season to come, I cannot wait! We brought along my son’s 5 year old friend, who had never seen live theatre before. As the show ended, I think he summed it up perfectly, “That. Was. Awesome!”

Yo Vikings! Is sold out for Friday’s performances, but there are still tickets available for Saturday. All tickets are just $9 each. Tickets can be purchased online at the Hangar Box office, or by calling 607.273.ARTS ( 2787).The rest of Hangar’s Kiddstuff Season are listed below. This season’s Mainstage productions also have one show that is kid friendly, “Around the World in 80 Days” (recommended for around 8 and up), playing June 26-July 5.

Bunnicula
July 3 - 5
Based on the popular story by James and Deborah Howe, BUNNICULA is a quirky rabbit, who may or may not be a bunny vampire! It is up to the family's cat and dog to solve the hilarious mystery.

Hare and Tortoise
July 17 - 19
One of Aesop's most famous fables depicts Tortoise and Hare, best friends but complete opposites in every way.  In a story that spans all the seasons of the year, we witness the greatest race ever, all the way to its nail biting finish.

The Little Prince
July 24 - 26
A world weary Aviator crash lands in the Sahara and meets the remarkable Little Prince to learn of his magical journey from his tiny planet to our own, as he teaches us "It is only with the heart that one can see rightly."

The Pirates of Penzance Jr.
August 7 - 9
Sail the swashbuckling seas in Gilbert and Sullivan's classic operetta! Performed by the Hangar's Next Generation School of Theatre, this exuberant adventure of pirates, police and major generals is sure to delight the entire family.
